A Certified Civil Trial Attorney is a designation granted by the New Jersey Supreme Court to attorneys who are able to demonstrate sufficient levels of experience, education, and skill in civil trial practice. Only 2% of attorneys in the State of New Jersey hold this designation. The Certification program helps the public find an attorney who has demonstrated proficiency in specialized fields of law. It also allows the attorney to make their experience known to the public and to peers.

In order to achieve this designation, there are several criteria an attorney must meet. The attorney must:

• Be a member in good standing of the New Jersey bar for more than 5 years;
• Fulfill ongoing continuing legal education requirements;
• Demonstrate a substantial level of experience in civil trial law;
• Be favorably evaluated by other attorneys and judges familiar with his or her work; and
• Take and pass a written exam in civil trial law.

Out of approximately 75,000 active attorneys in the State, only 1,650 hold board certification.
